back pain

Ortho Status

One of the most common pain syndromes of our time is chronic back pain. The causes are diverse. This increasingly affects younger patients, whose pain is often neglected due to a lack of conventional medical correlates. In this case, we offer advanced diagnostics and treatment, including consultation with other specialists if necessary.

The Ortho-Status is a standardized examination of the musculoskeletal system. It is performed for chronic back, chest, and urogenital pain and serves to determine the baseline status. The examination is part of the diagnostic process within the framework of multimodal pain therapy and is used, among other things, for pelvic tilt, scoliosis, and chronic pelvic pain syndrome, which can be caused by, among other things,  can be accompanied by pain during sexual intercourse.

Back pain that has persisted for more than twelve weeks is considered chronic. Studies show that approximately seven percent of the population is affected and is treated for long-term, painful changes in the back. Degenerative changes (wear and tear), usually in the spine or intervertebral discs, are considered the main cause of chronic back pain. Other causes include the supporting and moving elements of the back, i.e., muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

The causes are often a lack of exercise, poor posture, and excessive strain. Many therapeutic approaches address these issues: Targeted exercises and physiotherapy with back and posture training are established conservative treatment options. Weight loss for those who are overweight, back-friendly footwear, and suitable mattresses also contribute to alleviating symptoms. However, differential diagnosis should also be considered. Occasionally, it is not the back that is causing the problem, but other neighboring organs mimic back pain. Common examples include the kidneys (colic), the lower abdomen (e.g., in cases of fallopian tube or ovarian inflammation), the pancreas (inflammation), or the gallbladder (inflammation, colic).

This leads to severe, stabbing pain in the rib area, often perceived as tension in the intercostal muscles. Our practice specializes in diagnosing these conditions and offering individually tailored treatment options. Treatment includes various approaches, from medication for pain relief to physical therapy to relieve muscle tension. In some cases, injections or minimally invasive procedures may also be necessary to effectively treat the pain.
